(IDC) is projecting that the mobile application business will soon grow from 10.9 billion downloads this year to 76.9 billion downloads in 2014. This growth will also mean a 60% per year increase in mobile application revenue, says the report.By 2014, the mobile application business will generate $35 billion in revenue worldwide.Comparing the NumbersIDC isn’t the first to report such a startling increase in revenue generated by mobile applications. In January, for example, research firm Gartner predicted that app stores would become a $7 billion dollar business this year. By March, independent mobile app store GetJar released a study which predicted the mobile app marketplace would reach $17.5 billion by 2012. And GetJar’s numbers lined up with yet another report from research2guidance that estimated the smartphone market would grow to $15.65 by 2013.According to IDC’s report, however, mobile app revenue was at $4.9 billion this year, a bit lower than Gartner had predicted at 2010’s start.IDC’s report talked about the “appification” of a broad categories of interactions.“Mobile app developers will ‘appify’ just about every interaction you can think of in your physical and digital worlds,” said Scott Ellison, vice president, Mobile and Wireless research at IDC. “The extension of mobile apps to every aspect of our personal and business lives will be one of the hallmarks of the new decade with enormous opportunities for virtually every business sector.” sarah perez The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technologylast_img read more

5 Reasons You Fail at Cold Calling

first_imgHere are five reasons some people fail at cold calling.Cold calling doesn’t work when you aren’t making enough calls. If you make between 6 and 10 calls a day, you aren’t really prospecting. That isn’t enough calls to give yourself a fair chance at success. To make cold calling work you need an already researched target list and 60 to 80 fasterdials. That number will not only produce appointments, but it will also give you enough reps to get better faster.Your value prop is weak. If your cold calls aren’t producing results, one of the primary reasons for the failure to obtain appointments is that your sales call value proposition isn’t compelling. How would you like someone to “stop by,” to introduce myself and my services?” The great benefit your dream client can expect is a chance to listen to you talk about yourself and your company? You can see why they might pass. To make cold calling work, you have to ask for a meeting where your dream client receives the value.Asking for big commitments early on causes resistance. If your “ask” is open-ended when it comes to time, you frighten your dream client off. They believe you may wear out your welcome by sitting in front of them for 90 or 120 minutes. Even asking for an hour can be too much. A smaller commitment, like 20 or 30 minutes instead of an open-ended request, is more palatable. And your dream client can say “yes,” confident that they can bail out if you aren’t creating value.Cold calling won’t work if you don’t ask for a meeting twice. You should expect a “no” to your request for a meeting on your first attempt. Your dream client says “no” to everyone who calls, not knowing how to tell who is worth meeting and who isn’t. The first attempt elicits an objection, a test to see if you might be worth meeting. You must ask twice. You can’t succeed at cold calling without resolving your prospect’s fears or concerns. You will hear “We are already working with someone.” You’ll hear, “We are happy with the people we work with now.” You will also hear “Just mail me information,” and “I don’t have time right now.” None of these objections to a meeting is likely true. In fact, some of your competitors are meeting with people who gave them these objections. Your prospect’s real concern is that you aren’t going to make a meeting worth their while, that you don’t have any real insight, that you can’t really help them, and that they are going to regret meeting with you. You have to promise that none of these things are true. Are you making enough calls?Do you have a compelling value proposition for the meeting you are asking for?Is the commitment small enough that it is easy to say yes to?Are you always asking twice?Do you know how to resolve your prospects real concerns?last_img read more

52 Bangladeshis sent back from Assam

first_imgNRC investigation in Assam: The unbearable being of a D-voter The much-awaited complete draft of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC), expected to take Assam a step closer to segregating genuine citizens from illegal migrants, will be published at 10 a.m. on Monday. The complete draft, to decide the fate of 3.29 crore applicants including the 1.9 crore listed in the first draft published on December 31 last year, will be published online besides being displayed across 2,500 Nagarik Seva Kendras (NSKs) for NRC simultaneously. On Sunday, Section 144 of the Cr.PC was imposed in seven ‘sensitive’ districts, restricting the movement of people in groups of more than four. Officials, however, said they do not foresee violence owing to assurances by the Centre and the State government that those who are left out of the complete draft would get opportunities to establish their citizenship. The clamping of prohibitory orders coincided with the deportation of 52 Bangladeshis through the Mankachar sector on the Assam-Meghalaya-Bangladesh tri-junction.These 52 were ‘convicted foreigners’ as opposed to ‘declared foreigners’ who are marked thus by Foreigners’ Tribunals after failing the citizenship test and lodged in any of six detention camps. The convicted foreigners are also lodged in such camps, but they are self-declared aliens arrested for not having travel papers or for cross-border crimes.  The NRC has been updated with March 24, 1971 as the cut-off date for citizenship as mandated by the Assam Accord of 1985 that ended the six-year agitation.Mr. Sonowal also appealed for restraint from all linguistic, religious and ethnic groups after the publication of the second draft “just as you did during and after the first draft.”But precautionary measures and the deployment of 220 additional companies of central paramilitary forces comprising 22,000 personnel have betrayed apprehension about possible trouble.Section 144 is now in force in 10 of Assam’s 33 districts, and the majority of them are Muslim-dominated.It has been in force in some other areas, including Guwahati, for two months now.“We have identified 22 sensitive locations in and around the city,” Hiren Chandra Nath, the City Commissioner of Police, said. Also Read  “The 52 we handed over to Bangladesh had entered the country illegally and were arrested over a period of time from different parts of the State,” Amrit Bhuyan, Superintendent of Police of South Salmara-Mankachar district, told The Hindu. The intruders were pushed back after the Guwahati-based office of the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh issued travel permits for them, officials said.Historic documentChief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who held a meeting with leaders of all political parties seeking their cooperation for ensuring peace in the coming days, called the complete draft as a historic document. that will be the “armour of safety” for the people of Assam. He also allayed fears among a section of people, insisting “there is no need to panic as it is not the final NRC.”“More than 55,000 officers and employees devoted time to prepare an error-free NRC and ensure the exercise monitored by the Supreme Court and guided by the Registrar General of India is a success. The publication of the complete draft will go a long way in achieving what an agitation (against illegal migrants from 1979-1985) almost four decades ago had sought to,” he said. Also Readcenter_img NRC list: Govt will help all genuine citizens, says Sonowal  Intelligence inputsIntelligence inputs gathered by the Army, asked to be on standby, indicate there could be agitations against the administration. Officials did not rule out the possibility of NSKs and certain government offices being attacked and vandalised.Prateek Hajela, the NRC State Coordinator who devised the system for the first-ever exercise to update the 1951 NRC, said it could not be said at this juncture how many people would get left out of the complete draft.“We will give two months from July 30 for such people to send their claims and objections,” he said.last_img read more

U.S. Senate Bill Includes Generous Funding for Energy Science Programs

first_imgA bipartisan proposal from two U.S. senators calls for boosting the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) science budget by nearly 23% over the next 2 years to $5.4 billion—a more generous raise than either Republicans or Democrats in the House of Representatives have proposed. The draft legislation is intended to become part of larger bill, still under discussion, that would reauthorize the 2010 America COMPETES Act, which expired at the end of September. It would set overall policy and maximum spending levels at several key science agencies, including the National Science Foundation and DOE’s Office of Science, which runs 10 national laboratories and is one of the nation’s major funders of the physical sciences. The proposal is authored by senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN), a senior Republican who serves on key committees that oversee DOE and its budget, and Christopher Coons (D-DE), who serves on the appropriations committee. It calls for authorizing DOE science program to spend up to $6.9 billion in 2018, a 49% increase over its current level of $4.6 billion.Sign up for our daily newsletterGet more great content like this delivered right to you!Country *AfghanistanAland IslandsAlbaniaAlgeriaAndorraAngolaAnguillaAntarcticaAntigua and BarbudaArgentinaArmeniaArubaAustraliaAustriaAzerbaijanBahamasBahrainBangladeshBarbadosBelarusBelgiumBelizeBeninBermudaBhutanBolivia, Plurinational State ofBonaire, Sint Eustatius and SabaBosnia and HerzegovinaBotswanaBouvet IslandBrazilBritish Indian Ocean TerritoryBrunei DarussalamBulgariaBurkina FasoBurundiCambodiaCameroonCanadaCape VerdeCayman IslandsCentral African RepublicChadChileChinaChristmas IslandCocos (Keeling) IslandsColombiaComorosCongoCongo, The Democratic Republic of theCook IslandsCosta RicaCote D’IvoireCroatiaCubaCuraçaoCyprusCzech RepublicDenmarkDjiboutiDominicaDominican RepublicEcuadorEgyptEl SalvadorEquatorial GuineaEritreaEstoniaEthiopiaFalkland Islands (Malvinas)Faroe IslandsFijiFinlandFranceFrench GuianaFrench PolynesiaFrench Southern TerritoriesGabonGambiaGeorgiaGermanyGhanaGibraltarGreeceGreenlandGrenadaGuadeloupeGuatemalaGuernseyGuineaGuinea-BissauGuyanaHaitiHeard Island and Mcdonald IslandsHoly See (Vatican City State)HondurasHong KongHungaryIcelandIndiaIndonesiaIran, Islamic Republic ofIraqIrelandIsle of ManIsraelItalyJamaicaJapanJerseyJordanKazakhstanKenyaKiribatiKorea, Democratic People’s Republic ofKorea, Republic ofKuwaitKyrgyzstanLao People’s Democratic RepublicLatviaLebanonLesothoLiberiaLibyan Arab JamahiriyaLiechtensteinLithuaniaLuxembourgMacaoMacedonia, The Former Yugoslav Republic ofMadagascarMalawiMalaysiaMaldivesMaliMaltaMartiniqueMauritaniaMauritiusMayotteMexicoMoldova, Republic ofMonacoMongoliaMontenegroMontserratMoroccoMozambiqueMyanmarNamibiaNauruNepalNetherlandsNew CaledoniaNew ZealandNicaraguaNigerNigeriaNiueNorfolk IslandNorwayOmanPakistanPalestinianPanamaPapua New GuineaParaguayPeruPhilippinesPitcairnPolandPortugalQatarReunionRomaniaRussian FederationRWANDASaint Barthélemy Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da CunhaSaint Kitts and NevisSaint LuciaSaint Martin (French part)Saint Pierre and MiquelonSaint Vincent and the GrenadinesSamoaSan MarinoSao Tome and PrincipeSaudi ArabiaSenegalSerbiaSeychellesSierra LeoneSingaporeSint Maarten (Dutch part)SlovakiaSloveniaSolomon IslandsSomaliaSouth AfricaSouth Georgia and the South Sandwich IslandsSouth SudanSpainSri LankaSudanSurinameSvalbard and Jan MayenSwazilandSwedenSwitzerlandSyrian Arab RepublicTaiwanTajikistanTanzania, United Republic ofThailandTimor-LesteTogoTokelauTongaTrinidad and TobagoTunisiaTurkeyTurkmenistanTurks and Caicos IslandsTuvaluUgandaUkraineUnited Arab EmiratesUnited KingdomUnited StatesUruguayUzbekistanVanuatuVenezuela, Bolivarian Republic ofVietnamVirgin Islands, BritishWallis and FutunaWestern SaharaYemenZambiaZimbabweI also wish to receive emails from AAAS/Science and Science advertisers, including information on products, services and special offers which may include but are not limited to news, careers information & upcoming events.Required fields are included by an asterisk(*)A similar proposal released by Democrats on the House science panel would boost the science office’s budget by a smaller amount, 33.7% over 5 years to $6.3 billion. Both bills would give DOE more in fiscal year 2014 than the $5.2 billion that President Barack Obama has requested from Congress.House Republicans envision much more modest increases. Their proposal, available so far only in summary,  would increase DOE science spending by 2.7% over 2 years, to $4.8 billion. In contrast, over that same 2-year period the Senate would boost DOE science spending by 22.9% , and the House Democrats by 17.1%. (Click here for a table comparing the proposals.)The Senate proposal also includes a funding plan for the Advanced Research Projects-Energy (ARPA-E), which calls for boosting its current $264 million budget by 67% over 5 years, to $440 million. The House Democrats proposal calls for a heftier 75% increase to $461 million over the same period. House Republicans have not proposed funding levels for ARPA-E.Not surprisingly, the Senate proposal has pleased research groups who advocate for bigger DOE budgets. But the numbers come with some big caveats. One is that these authorized levels, even if approved by Congress, don’t actually commit Congress to provide those sums. Indeed, appropriators rarely meet authorized spending limits. In fiscal year 2013, for instance, DOE’s science programs received $1.4 billion less than the spending target of about $6 billion in the 2010 law.Another is that it is not clear whether the House and Senate will agree on new authorizing legislation to replace COMPETES. Both bodies are contemplating action, and several bills have been floated in the House. But prospects for finishing the job anytime soon are murky.last_img read more

Opposition demands Devendra Fadnavis’ resignation

first_imgThe Opposition Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Tuesday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis after the Supreme Court set aside the Bombay High Court order that gave him a clean chit in a case of not disclosing criminal matters in a 2014 poll affidavit. The NCP’s chief spokesperson and Mumbai unit president Nawab Malik said that Mr. Fadnavis had no right to contest elections, which are scheduled to be held on October 21.A Supreme Court Bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Tuesday set aside the Bombay High Court order, which had given a clean chit to Mr. Fadnavis and had held that he did not deserve to be tried for the alleged offences under the Representation of the People Act. The apex court’s order came on an appeal of Nagpur-based advocate Satish Ukey against the High Court verdict. The petitioner had alleged that Mr. Fadnavis, in his election affidavit filed in 2014, failed to disclose the pendency of two criminal cases against him.‘Welcome decision’“We welcome this decision. This proves the Chief Minister doesn’t obey rules. Now, he has no moral right left to remain in politics. He should resign immediately and renounce political life. He has no right to contest the election,” Mr. Malik said. Also Read  Mumbai Congress president Eknath Gaikwad too demanded the resignation of Mr. Fadnavis. “The police should take action as per court’s directives. The CM is the head of the State and Mr. Fadnavis remaining on this post would hamper police action,” he said. The Chief Minister’s Office, however, in a statement said that it was wrong and contemptuous to say the Supreme Court had allowed his prosecution in the case. The apex court’s judgement had no bearing on him to continue as a public representative or to contest the next election, said the statement. It claimed that in both the cases in question, Mr. Fadnavis was acting in public interest and no private interest was involved. Games organisers get England CWG chief Holmes’ support

first_imgCommonwealth Games England President Kelly Holmes has leapt to the defence of the scandal-marred Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next month, saying that it would be a success and Indians will feel “proud” despite the construction delays, security and health concerns. The Games, starting on October 3, have faced multiple problems, including corruption, threats of terror attack and dengue fever, unhygienic conditions at Athletes’ Village and collapse of a footbridge near the main venue.Despite the ongoing problems, Holmes believes the Games can be a huge success, citing the 2004 Olympics — which overcame problems of its own to be a great triumph – as a marker.”I compare it to the Athens Olympics when they were still planting trees on the day it opened. I don’t think it can get any worse than that,” she was quoted as saying by ‘The Times’.However, Holmes said she returned from her visit to Delhi last month largely unimpressed with the state of some of the venues.”I was there on the prime ministerial visit and I’m not going to lie – it was a building site. Without the safety certificates for the venues it wasn’t going to go ahead but they came through last Monday,” said Holmes who won two gold — in 800m and 1500m race — in Athens.Although Holmes said she understands why some feel it is wrong to host the mega-event in a country where a third of the population live in poverty, she is hoping it will bring joy to the country.advertisement”It’s a fair point with a nation where so many people are in unfortunate positions, but I really hope the Games brings a different energy and makes some people feel proud. I just hope the general public in India will be given the chance to go to the Games,” she said.England Sports Minister Hugh Robertson and CWG chef de mission Craig Hunter have also committed that the country would take part in the Games but the latter warned the organisers that time is running out for them to clean up the preparation mess.last_img read more

Manchester United to take up option to extend Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s contract

first_imgManchester United will exercise their option to extend veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s contract for a second season at Old Trafford, manager Jose Mourinho said on Wednesday. The 35-year-old Ibrahimovic, who joined on a free transfer in July, has had a mixed start to his United career despite scoring eight goals in 17 games in all competitions.”Zlatan’s situation is simple: he has a one-plus-one contract with the club and we will execute the option of a second season,” Mourinho told reporters. The former Sweden captain, who was suspended for Saturday’s 1-1 Premier League draw at home to Arsenal, ended a six-game goal drought in a win over Swansea City earlier this month.”He’s happy, committed and loving his life as a football player at United,” Mourinho added.”This is probably the last big challenge of his wonderful career, so it is perfect for him to be here for the next 18 months and then he owns the decision of his future.”Ibrahimovic said the extension is “automatic after a while”, but the criteria for it to be triggered has yet to be fulfilled.”We didn’t even have any discussions. I feel good, I feel fresh, I feel like now I’ll probably take a second year,” he said.”I want to be honest with myself and I don’t want to waste time. The second year goes automatic after a while, there’s no word from me and no word from them. If it continues like this then it is a yes.”Ibrahimovic also leapt to the defence of Paul Pogba, who returned to United from Juventus for a world record fee of 89 million pounds ($110.07 million) in August, saying the France international needs more time to find his feet at the club.advertisementPogba has yet to light up the Premier League, scoring just twice in 11 games, as the powerful midfielder struggles to cope with the pace and intensity of English football.”There is big pressure on him because people expect magic in a short time instead of being realistic,” said Ibrahimovic.United, who are third in their Europa League group, host second-placed Feyenoord on Thursday before facing West Ham United in the league three days later.last_img read more
