Facebook4Tweet0Pin0Submitted by Westport WineryAt the sixth annual New York International Wine Competition Westport Winery was awarded Washington State Dry Red Blend Winery of the Year with Smoky Nor’wester. According to event organizers, “Almost 1200 wines were submitted from over 25 countries and less than 45% won a medal.”Westport Winery’s Smokey Nor’westerSmoky Nor’wester, a blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Syrah, is described in the winery’s tasting notes as having “Maserati intensity, like a good spanking.” With that description you can see why it earned this high honor. All of the Bordeaux grapes were grown at Two Blondes Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA. The Syrah was grown at Discovery Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA.A portion of the proceeds from this wine benefits the Museum of the North Beach in Moclips, Washington. The label art of a siren waiting for her ship to come in was provided by the museum. A smoky nor’wester is a weather phenomenon where an ominous heavy fog roils across the ocean from the northwest. The Smoky Nor’wester sculpture located in the winery’s 15-acre display garden was created by the winery’s executive chef Nicole Demmert. Demmert, a member of the Haida tribe of Southeastern Alaska and a graduate of the Seattle Art Institute, turned to her heritage to design this piece. According to Demmert this is the story of the trickster raven traveling over the clouds to stop the raindrops from falling.Westport Winery’s “Smokey Nor’wester sculpture was crafted by chef Nicole Demmert and depicts the story of the trickster raven traveling over the clouds to stop the raindrops from falling.Chef Demmert recommends that this be paired with their ‘Shroom Steak with sautéed mushroom and Petite Sira demi glace. Each of the wines on the list is also paired with music and in this case they recommend listening to Life’s Been Good To Me So Far by Joe Walsh.Westport Winery was named 2011 Washington Winery to Watch by Wine Press Northwest. They have been voted Best Winery byKing 5 Evening Magazine for six of the past eight years. If all the funding aligns, the Grand Forks Community Trail Society (GFCTS) could have the first 1.7 kilometers of the 17 km Trans Canada Trail between Grand Forks and Christina Lake paved by this summer.Last week the society was awarded $56,000 from the TransCanada Trail Foundation to start the first phase of paving between 68th Street in Grand Forks to the Nursery. The entire project, which will cost an estimated $1.6 million, has been broken down into three phases to make it more affordable. The first phase will cost an estimated $101,640.Loosing no time due to the March 15 grant-imposed deadline to have the engineering design created by, Ken Oliver from Urban Systems spent this week designing the trail. He’s being followed by an environmental assessment. The assessment recommendations will be used in designing the paved areas.“Things are underway and we’re pretty excited,” said Mary Ann Westaway, GFCTS treasurer who also attending the city council meeting earlier this week to ask for funding consideration.“This used to be a dream and now that dream is taking off.” Westaway said when the society paved the trails within Grand Forks they saw a huge increase in the number of users. She hopes to see the same between Christina Lake and Grand Forks. She said the paving will make it easier for cyclists, baby strollers, roller blades and will make the paths more visible from the highway, which may attract more tourists to use it.But the $56,000 will only go so far. The society is asking the city to help out with an additional $50,000.While the city could not commit to the money, they did commit to considering the request.“It is on the table,” said Grand Forks mayor Brian Taylor during the regular city council meeting on Monday, Feb. 4. “And congratulations – your efforts have been tireless.”The paving project broken down into three phases – first phase to the city limits, second phase to the end of Gilpin Grasslands Provincial Park and the final phase to the east end of Cascade Gorge – will make the – project easier to find funding for.To alleviate some of the earlier controversy from ATV users that paving the trail would limit their use, the trails society has been working closely with the Grand Forks All Terrain Vehicle Club (GFATV), said Westaway. The ATV Club has representatives who sit in on the trail society meetings and a user agreement is being established between the two groups on which users will be using which trails in the community. Also, there are many horse riders who like to use the trail system between Cascade Gorge and Gilpin Grasslands Provincial Park, so future plans hope to accommodate them by providing a soft shoulder alongside the paving, said Westaway. To find out more about the project visit www.gftrails.ca.
Trinidad and Tobago’s quest to do the double got off to the perfect start when they thoroughly thrashed the Leeward Islands by a mammoth 176 runs in the first round of the Regional Under-19 50-Over Championship here yesterday.Joshua PersaudFresh from capturing the three-day title, T&T produced a solid batting performance on their way to posting the day’s highest total of 249 for seven from their 50 overs. Leonardo Julien, who top-scored with 82, and Joshua James, who stroked an unbeaten 53, were the mainstay of T&T’s innings.Julien, who faced 114 balls and smashed four boundaries and four sixes, shared in two half-century partnerships to help guide T&T from a spot of bother early on.He joined forces with Crystian Thurton (26) to add 62 runs for the third wicket, after they had slipped to 34-2.Following the dismissals of Thurton and Mbeki Joseph (9), he and James added 60 runs in 12 overs to help push the score to 189-5. Once Julien lost his wicket trying to up the tempo, James found a worthy partner in Rivaldo Ramlogan, who smashed a quick-fire 35 from just 20 balls to help them up to their eventual score.James hit two fours and one six in his unbeaten 64-ball knock. The Leewards never came close to mounting a serious challenge, with Teron Jadoo and Justyn Gangoo running through the middle- and lower-order to skittle them out for just 73. With the score on 43-2, the Leewards incredibly lost their last eight wickets for just 30 runs. Elroy Francis who scored 32 was the only double-digit contributor.Kevin SinclairJadoo finished with the spectacular figures of three wickets for one run, while Gangoo snagged 3-14. Both Guyana and the Windward Islands recorded six-wicket victories over Canada and Jamaica respectively. Thanks to a four-wicket haul by Kevin Sinclair, Guyana bundled out Canada for 146 runs, with Kavian Naresh being Canada’s main contributor with 57.Propelled by Joshua Persaud’s 62-ball knock of 80, Guyana then made light work of the total, racing to 147 for four in just 24 overs. It was a similarly comfortable win for the Windward Islands, who dismissed Jamaica for a paltry 159. They then motored along at almost six runs an over on their way to scoring 164-4 in 27.5 overs. Openers Kimani Melius, who top-scored with 86, and Jahseon Alexander, 58, put on 146 for the first wicket to set the Windwards on the path to victory. (CMC)
TORONTO — When reporters gathered in manager Bruce Bochy’s office following the Giants’ 3-2 win on Sunday, his desk featured a sizable new decoration.A three-liter bottle of wine featuring a picture taken off of an old baseball card from his playing days sat next Bochy, who is in the midst of his 25th and final season as a major league manager.Nearly everyone in the room had the same idea. The bottle was surely a gift from the Pittsburgh Pirates, who wanted to acknowledge Bochy’s career and …

Vine/CMTomlinYou can’t accuse Hampton head coach Edward Joyner of not having a sense of humor about his team’s chances against undefeated Kentucky. During today’s post-game press conference following the Pirates’ win against Manhattan, Joyner pretended to call Jesus to ask about his team’s odds against the Wildcats. Apparently, Jesus went chalk in his bracket.Hampton’s coach just pretended to call Jesus about their odds against Kentucky and Jesus hung up on him. https://t.co/hr87mfqoG0— C.M.
