by Anne Galloway, www.vtdigger.org(link is external), April 22, 2011 Senate discipline broke down last night. Instead of voting out a final version of the miscellaneous tax bill out and reading through the health care bill as planned, members engaged in a polite floor fight and went home early. After three hours of hemming and hawing in committee and private meetings over a controversial hike in the cigarette tax, the Senate gathered on the floor and went through the parliamentary motions to begin what was supposed to culminate in a debate and vote on a new cigarette tax proposal. But within the space of 20 minutes, that plan went up in smoke, along with the introduction of Sen. Anthony Pollina’s surtax on wealthy Vermonters and the second reading of the health care reform bill. The situation devolved into arcane parliamentary procedure and then premature adjournment so quickly that the turn of events even took veteran statehouse observers by surprise. One minute, the 30-member body was set to vote on what was purported to be final version of the long-awaited the tax bill. The next, a minority group of senators blocked suspension of the rules to move the legislation forward. (Sen. Ginnie Lyons, D-Chittenden, moved to reconsider H.436, the tax bill. Sen. Mark MacDonald reminded the body of Rule 73: A motion to reconsider cannot be made on the same day of consideration without a suspension of the rules. The majority needed three-quarters of the vote to suspend the rules: It failed to muster the necessary 22 votes.)Meanwhile, Sen. Anthony Pollina, D-Washington, attempted to introduce his ‘surtax on the rich’ amendment and was told he was out of order (it was a rookie mistake ‘ he didn’t realize he was inadvertently elbowing Lyons’ amendment out of the way).Once Lyons’ motion on the tax bill failed, Senate President Pro Tem John Campbell tried to get the situation under control by insisting that the body move forward with the second reading of the health care reform bill. Another minority group spontaneously formed (including a number of members of Senate Finance who were angry that the tax bill was passed over) ‘ expressly to scuttle action on the health care legislation.Campbell responded by calling for immediate adjournment, an early morning floor session on Good Friday and a rare Monday Senate session. Members interpreted this declaration as a form of retaliation and at that point balked openly.Privately, senators accused Campbell of driving them too hard. (Senate Appropriations met on Monday, and each night this week, the Senate has held late sessions, after long days in committee.)Several members said they couldn’t possibly meet on Monday. ‘We are a citizen legislature maintaining day jobs,’ Sen. Joe Benning, R-Caledonia, said.‘People aren’t talking to each other,’ Sen. Dick Sears, D-Bennington, said. ‘Communication has broken down.’Sen. Peter Galbraith, D-Windham, chalked up the kerfuffle to a disgruntled bipartisan minority. Campbell’s reaction, he said, was appropriate. ‘It’s quite normal for the parliamentary leader to control the schedule,’ Galbraith said. But did he? That remains to be seen. A number of the members came out of the Green Room sputtering or headed for the exit.Sen. Kevin Mullin, R-Rutland, said the dissension is between liberal and conservative Democrats over taxes. Earlier in the day, the Senate in a 16-14 vote rejected a $1 per pack cigarette tax increase. In a statement on the tax issue, Shumlin said: ‘I am pleased that the Senate voted to reduce the increase in the cigarette tax from the initial proposal of $1 per pack to 53 cents per pack ‘ a step in the right direction — and rejected a call to raise the income tax. I continue to believe that Vermont’s problem isn’t that taxes are too low, but that taxes are too high.”‘It’s hard to control a super majority,’ Mullin quipped. ‘Unless they get their act together, we’re not going to get out of here before May 7.’ Anne Galloway is editor of vtdigger.org

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce insists he has received no indication from the club’s owners that his future is under threat. Press Association Allardyce is due to meet Sullivan next week but the Hammers boss does not believe his position will be on the agenda. “I rang him up and spoke to him about what’s been planted around and under those circumstances we just talked about getting together and having our meeting next week,” Allardyce said. “The only thing I can say is I spoke to David Sullivan yesterday about us arranging our usual end-of-the-season meeting to go through pre-season and go through budgets and what will happen next season. “I had no indication that my position is under threat. That’s all I know, he’s the boss and that’s the bottom line for me.” Allardyce added: ” People in the game have to write speculation because they have to sell newspapers. “Whether that speculation becomes a reality we don’t know but I will find out next week if it is.” West Ham are 12th in the Barclays Premier League table and have secured their top-flight status for a second consecutive season. Allardyce rang co-chairman David Sullivan on Thursday after reports emerged suggesting he faced the sack after the team’s final game of the season at Manchester City on Sunday. Hammers fans have regularly vented their frustration over the club’s style of football under Allardyce and Sullivan apologised for the campaign at the club’s end-of-season awards dinner on Tuesday night.
Kwesé in partnership with Kalakoda Boxing Promotions is bringing the Friday Fight Nights series dubbed, Chaos in Lagos, to Nigeria on 26 October.Scheduled to take place at the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Chaos in Lagos, will feature the much-anticipated rematch between Chomunorwa ‘Sting’ Gondarenda and Tony ‘Sugar’ Salam for Gondarenda’s WBF Africa Cruiserweight title.Nigerian sports fans wanting to tune-in for all the live action will be spoilt for viewing options, thanks to Kwesé’s multiplatform broadcasting approach. Kwesé said it will provide full broadcast coverage of the event through satellite TV on channel 285 on the Kwesé TV bouquet, the Kwesé TV app linked to an active pay TV subscription, or Kwesé Free Sports UHF channel 32, as well as the Kwesé iflix mobile app.“For viewers outside Nigeria, Kwesé has signed sublicense agreements with various free-to-air (FTA) broadcasters across the continent, to ensure millions of viewers across the continent can enjoy free access to the fight wherever they are. The event will also be streamed on YouTube Live.”Salam and Gondarenda fought in August to a disputed decision in Harare where Gondarenda retained his belt on a split decision. Immediately after the fight Gondarenda said that he would fight Salam again, “any time any place,” this time it will be in Salam’s backyard with neutral judges agreed by both camps. The fight is a contrast of styles with Gondarenda the come forward fighter, and Salam the slick counter puncher, fighting often on the back foot. Salam will need to be more definitive in his approach, he clearly landed the cleaner blows, but it was the Zimbabwean champion’s relentless aggression and ring control that perhaps swayed the judges during their first match up.“The Friday Fight Night series has been successfully staged across the continent, it is now Nigeria’s turn to roll out the red carpet and put on an exceptional sporting display. As a premium sports destination, Kwesé is proud to once again provide full broadcast coverage of yet another first-class sporting event. This is one event sports fans do not want to miss, thanks to our multiscreen broadcasting options, they won’t have to,” expressed General Manager for Kwesé TV in Nigeria Elizabeth Amkpa. The remainder of the bill features some of Nigeria’s and West Africa’s top boxers who frequently fight in the USA and Europe, and provides the opportunity to show off their skills in front of home fans. Kalakoda Promotions partnership with LPMG Management and Don King Productions have made such fighters available for the occasion, with a long-term view of unleashing the untapped potential of Nigeria and Lagos as a fight destination. The likes of Ghana’s Habib Ahmed and Cruiserweight Olanrewaju Durodola will all feature on a stacked undercard.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram
AUBREY BRUCEThe definition of the noun mum•mer is; an actor in a traditional masked mime, especially of a type associated with Christmas and popular in England in the 18th and early 19th centuries, a pantomimist, archaic derogatory. In the 1970s there were protests from various African American individuals and organizations in regards to participants in the annual New Year’s Day Mummers parade held in Philadelphia wearing “blackface” makeup.Anytime that an African American has to wear whiteface or a European American has to apply blackface just to “entertain” or gain attention profiles the fact that the talent of that person more than likely is severely limited.Let’s take a look at the 20th century radio and television show Amos ‘n’ Andy. From its inception the “entertainment” show was purposely dedicated to ridiculing Black culture in every way, shape and form.“Amos ‘n’ Andy was an American radio and television sitcom set in Manhattan’s historic Black community of Harlem, which was popular from the 1920s through the 1950s. The original radio show was created, written and voiced by two White actors, Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll, who played a number of different characters, including the titular Amos Jones (Gosdon) and Andrew Hogg Brown (Correll). As the show came to television, Black actors took over the overwhelming majority of the roles; White characters were infrequent.” As long as the show was on radio, Black actors were not needed because no one could see the faces behind the voices. However, when the show evolved into television, the producers and the casting directors were forced to hire Black actors to portray the principal characters because even back then during the nasty pre-affirmative action days it was frowned upon for White actors to portray Black buffoons because they figured that Black performers could do a great job reinforcing all of those negative stereotypes by themselves coupled with the fact that very few cinematic or television roles were even offered to Blacks.Sports commentator Jason Whitlock recently wrote a piece on espn.com criticizing the legendary Black football coach Tony Dungy in regards to his opinion about the young NFL hopeful Michael Sam revealing to the world that he is gay. The column is titled; “Dungy wrong about Michael Sam Ex-NFL coach should support Sam as he once supported Vick”In reference to Mr. Whitlock, I use the prefix “mister” liberally. Whitlock quoted Mr. Dungy from an article that Dungy originally did with Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune. Mr. Dungy said during that interview that “I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it [drafting an openly gay player]. It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen.”This is a statement that most Americans realize is true. Why? Because many gay Americans have trepidation about revealing to their own family and friends that they are homosexual and a certain percentage of the time, thins do not go smoothly; so what makes Jason Whitlock or any other observer come to the conclusion that things may go smooth for a high profile NFL athlete?Whitlock’s rebuttal to Tony Dungy’s statement was; “America is not a totally smooth place, idea or experiment. We’re a melting pot of races, ethnicities, cultures, religions and everything else. We rose to global power and maintained it because we chose to deal with all sorts of diversity challenges other countries have shied away from. Things have happened here — things far more problematic than media “distractions” — that we have overcome through leadership and a willingness to push beyond our comfort zone.”It appears that the only comfort zone that Monsieur Whitlock has is standing in front of the line in Bank America to cash that big fat ass “sell out” check. Oh, sorry my batt, I forgot he probably has direct deposit. Is continued and systematic racism and bias being dealt with directly and honestly or do most people still tell the lies that have been told since Black slaves were emancipated lies like; ” I don’t see color and I have a lot of Black friends?”Whitlock is one of the slyest manipulators, oops I meant to say media guys that may presently exist. If this was the year 2011 and he was still regularly plying his craft on the homophobic, anti-Obama, anti-poor, 46 percent, Mitt Romney lovin, Paul Ryan pleasin, Fox Television Network he would certainly not be defending any athlete’s right or choice to be gay or Black or poor. Why does Michael Vick have to be the measuring stick and the barometer for any negative issues surrounding professional football? Yes, Michael Vick had a choice not to participate in an illegal dog fighting ring and Michael Sam had a choice not to reveal what goes on in his bedroom.Whitlock has the audacity to say and promote this line of BS against Tony Dungy while there are still a dozen states that continue have antiquated almost centuries old laws against sodomy on the books.Following is an excerpt from an Associated Press story published on April 21, 2014. in USA Today said that; “A dozen states still have anti-sodomy laws on the books 10 years after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled they are unconstitutional. One such state is Louisiana, where gay rights groups contend police have used anti-sodomy laws to target gay men. But state lawmakers sided with religious and conservative groups in refusing to repeal the law last week.Of 14 states that had anti-sodomy laws, only Montana and Virginia have repealed theirs since the Supreme Court ruling, said Sarah Warbelow, legal director for the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights organization. Warbelow says that in addition to Louisiana, anti-sodomy laws remain on the books in Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Utah. The Supreme Court ruled in Lawrence v. Texas in 2003 that it is unconstitutional to bar consensual sex between adults, calling it a violation of the 14th Amendment. Last year, police in East Baton Rouge Parish arrested gay men for attempted crimes against nature using the anti-sodomy law in a sting operation that caused a national outcry. The district attorney wouldn’t bring charges against the arrested men, saying the law was unenforceable.”If Michael Sam Had kept his business to himself, no one could have objected to his sexual preferences. Jason Whitlock had this to say about Michael Vick to foxsports.com regarding the little nightclub fiasco that Vick experienced while he was still a Philadelphia Eagle.“Look, I tried to get on board with the Vick reclamation project. I’m sympathetic to the plight of ex-cons. Re-entry into mainstream society can be very difficult for a parolee. I was proud that Andy Reid and McNabb took on the challenge of trying to rehabilitate Vick. Things have not worked out. The Eagles kicked my favorite active QB (McNabb) to the curb. And Vick has shown no legitimate commitment to developing as an NFL quarterback. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning don’t have reality TV shows. They also don’t throw “white linen” birthday parties at local nightclubs. Vick craves street cred more than quarterback credibility. That’s always been his problem..Vick still wants to be king of the ‘hood. He wants his name to ring out in Newport News. Dumbass .And all of his defenders/enablers are just as stupid. What’s always bothered me about Vick is that he’s far more beloved in the Black community than McNabb. It’s mind-boggling to me.” Jason Whitlock is the Clarence Thomas of Black sports journalism. He is the unofficial representative of the “Tea Party” in regards to the coverage of Black athletes. He insinuated that many Blacks are stupid because they don’t share his views of Vick or the ever smiling company man Donovan McNabb. Whitlock’s prior quotes bear repeating: “Vick still wants to be king of the ‘hood. He wants his name to ring out in Newport News. Dumbass, And all of his [Michael Vick’s]defenders/enablers are just as stupid. What’s always bothered me about Vick is that he’s far more beloved in the Black community than McNabb. It’s mind-boggling to me.” Whitlock even blames it on Michael Vick that the Black community still supports Vick. Why should Whitlock be angry because the entire Black community has not become house Negroes like him and talk negatively about one of their own?Why doesn’t Whitlock ride his white horse into the “hood” and fully express his putrid views about Michael Vick there as opposed to doing so from the safety of the “Fox” soapbox? Why is he so fearful of going into the Black community crusading his prosecutorial and dark views about Michael Vick?If Jason Whitlock is such a defender of gay rights and Michael Sam why doesn’t he go to one of the twelve states where sodomy is still illegal and mount a crusade to repeal the anti-gay and sodomy laws in those states? As far as Jason Whitlock goes you, I, and the rest of the sports journalism world as well as the fans and the athletes would be better served if Massa Whitlock would be featured on radio broadcast’s only therefore making it almost impossible to discern whether he is White or Black because on television he will almost always be required to wear a white face.(The sources for this story were AP and Fox Sports)Aubrey Bruce can be reached at: [email protected] or 412.583.6741Follow him on Twitter @ultrascribe
TAMPA, Fla. – In a stinging defeat for prosecutors, a former Florida professor accused of helping lead a terrorist group that has carried out suicide bombings against Israel was acquitted on nearly half the charges against him Tuesday, and the jury deadlocked on the rest. The case against Sami Al-Arian, 47, had been seen as one of the biggest courtroom tests yet of the Patriot Act’s expanded search-and-surveillance powers. After a five-month trial and 13 days of deliberations, the jury acquitted Al-Arian of eight of the 17 counts against him, including a key charge of conspiring to maim and murder people overseas. The jurors deadlocked on the others, including charges that he aided terrorists. Al-Arian, a former University of South Florida computer engineering professor, wept after the verdicts, and his attorney, Linda Moreno hugged him. He will return to jail until prosecutors decide whether to retry him on the deadlocked charges. A third, Hatem Naji Fariz, was found not guilty on 25 counts, and jurors deadlocked on the remaining eight. “While we respect the jury’s verdict, we stand by the evidence we presented in court,” Justice Department spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos said. Al-Arian’s wife, Nahla, celebrated outside the courthouse with family members and supporters. “I’m ecstatic,” she said. “My husband is an outspoken Palestinian activist who loved this country, believed in the system, and the system did not fail him.” Moreno said she hoped prosecutors would take into account the “overwhelming number of not-guilty verdicts” against the defendants in deciding whether to try Al-Arian again. “We are so grateful to these jurors,” Moreno said. “They worked hard.” She planned to ask the court soon to release Al-Arian from jail. Federal prosecutors said Sami Al-Arian and his co-defendants acted as the communications arm of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, spreading the word and raising money that went toward the suicide attacks that have killed hundreds. Al-Arian was considered one of the most important terrorist figures to be brought to trial in the United States since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. His indictment in 2003 was hailed by then-Attorney General John Ashcroft as one of the first triumphs of the Patriot Act, which was enacted in the weeks after Sept. 11. The Patriot Act gave the government greatly expanded powers and broke down the wall between foreign intelligence investigations and domestic law enforcement. In the Al-Arian case, officials said, it allowed separate FBI investigations – one of them a years-long secret foreign intelligence probe of the professor’s activities – to be combined and all the evidence used against him. A male juror, whose name was being kept secret by the court, said he did not see the case as a First Amendment issue, as defense attorneys had claimed, explaining that the decision came down to lack of proof. “I didn’t see the evidence,” he said. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
