first_imgFRISCO, Texas – Lamar’s Lucy Ashworth, Northwestern State’s Hallie Field and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Kyleigh Hall are the Southland Conference Soccer Players of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Southland Players of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank. The Cardinals (3-5) secured back-to-back wins over Texas Southern and Oral Roberts to wrap up non-conference play. Lamar will take on Nicholls to open league action at 7 p.m. CT Friday. The Islanders (3-4) also put a nice bow on their non-conference action with a pair of 1-0 road wins over Prairie View A&M and UTRGV. A&M-Corpus Christi begins the Southland portion of their schedule at UIW at 5 p.m. Friday. Offensive Player of the Week: Lucy Ashworth, Lamar – Jr. – Forward – Wigan, EnglandAshworth found the back of the net in each of the Cardinals’ contests last week to help Lamar claim consecutive victories for the first time this fall. Her first goal of the week put LU ahead 2-0 over Texas Southern in the 66th minute and spark a second-half scoring onslaught that saw four goals in a span of 20 minutes. Honorable Mention: Allyson Halliday, Stephen F. Austin; Margaret Kofron, UIW; Sandra Nygard, Lamar. The Demons (3-5) concluded their non-conference slate with victories over Texas State and Louisiana before they travel to Stephen F. Austin for both schools’ conference opener at 7 p.m. Friday. Goalkeeper of the Week: Kyleigh Hall, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Jr. – Goalkeeper – Mansfield, TexasHall recorded clean sheets in each of the Islanders’ wins last week and tallied 10 saves across 199:44 minutes of minding the net. Facing a barrage of shots from UTRGV, she made seven saves and kept the Vaqueros off the board. Hall carried that momentum into Sunday’s contest against Prairie View A&M, stopping three shots in the overtime win. The Wigan, England, native scored again on Sunday to get Lamar on the board in the fourth minute of a 2-1 triumph over Oral Roberts. Ashworth has five goals on the year and leads the league in shots (44) after taking 17 attempts last week. Defensive Player of the Week: Hallie Field, Northwestern State – Fr. – Defender – Frisco, TexasField’s first collegiate goal served as the deciding goal in a 1-0 win over Texas State, snapping an eight-match losing streak against the Bobcats. On the defensive side, she anchored a Demon defense that held opponents to just one goal in 200 minutes. NSU also came out on top of a 2-1 overtime affair against Louisiana, the first win in the program’s last seven tries against the Ragin’ Cajuns. Ashworth is the Offensive Player of the Week, and Field is crowned the Defensive Player of the Week. Hall picks up her first Goalkeeper of the Week honor. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted.
